Congo: World Bank offers US$75m to improve electricity supply

LIBREVILLE, Jan 25 (Infosplusgabon) – The World Bank is giving US$75 million to Congo's National Electricity Corporation to improve its infrastructure and train staff, a senior official of the Bank has said.

The World Bank director of operations for Congo, Eustache Ouayoro, was quoted as making the announcement after a meeting on Thursday with the Congolese Energy and Hydrology Minister, Henri Ossébi, during which they discussed issues regarding water, electricity and urban development.

Ouayoro noted that numerous studies had been done on the sector and "the time has come for their implementation".

He said staff of the electricity corporation should not be sacked nor the French Electricity company blamed "but it is a matter of implementing particular programmes with affordable costs for the benefit of the poorer sections of the population".

Congo and the World Bank have since 2009 jointly funded the Water, Electricity and Urban Development Project at a cost of US$135 million with the construction and rehabilitation of basic infrastructure. (With Pana).
