Monrovia, Liberia, December 29 (Infosplusgabon) - Losing candidate in Liberia’s presidential run-off, incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai, has congratulated winner George Weah after preliminary results were announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Weah garnered 61.5 percent of the votes cast in the 26 December polls against 38.5 percent for Boakai with some 98.1 percent of the ballots already reported and announced.

Addressing the media Friday, Boakai said he was “respecting the will of the people as announced by NEC.”

He explained that contesting for the presidency of Liberia was not an attempt to seek status, but one intended to serve the nation.

Boakai said he had called Weah to congratulate him and avail himself to the president-elect to serve in any capacity the new leader would deem necessary.

The standard bearer of the ruling Unity Party called on his partisans and supporters to be patriotic and keep the peace, as well as demonstrate to the world that Liberia can be a better place.

He thanked the international community for its role in helping to ensure credible, transparent and fair polls during the entire electoral process.

The National Elections Commission said it would announce the final results on Friday.

The NEC reported that some 1.9 million voters participated in the 26 December polls, compared to the 1.6 million that took part in the first round on 10 October.
