Banjul, Gambia, December 26 (Infosplusgabon) - Dr. Amadou Scattred Janneh, a former Gambian Information Minister, has signaled the formation of a new political party which will soon be inaugurated in the West African country.

He made the disclosure on Tuesday during an interview, conducted at the Jammeh Victims Center situated in Kotu in Gambia’s largest town of Serekunda.

“We are already in the process of forming a political party. We have our draft constitution, draft manifesto and there is a core group working on it as we speak,” Dr. Janneh, former minister under ex-president Yahya Jammeh, announced.

According to him, within the coming few days they should be able to adopt the documents and provide the timeline for formal registration and inauguration of the new party.

He said the party’s executive, emblem and name were being determined and it would very likely be named as Liberal Alliance or National Democratic Party.

Quizzed why he decided to come up with a new party, Janneh, a strong human rights activist, replied: “we defeated a repressive regime and now we are beginning to establish a democratic environment and one aspect of that is political pluralism. None of the current political parties is either willing or able to bring about the change that we envision.”

He said his new party would bring in fresh ideas and new approach to governance in the Gambia. “We will put the Gambian people first and ensure that the perennial problems are addressed.”

Dr. Janneh pointed out that Gambia’s pressing problems, like youth unemployment and energy crises, would be tackled if his party succeeded in winning the election.

“We will promote democratic governance and open society. Human rights and the rule of law will be at the centre of our engagement.” He added that the mass exodus of Gambian youths to Europe would be reversed by creating meaningful employment for them.

Dr. Janneh also promised that his new party would do more in trying to foster more collaboration between the Gambia and neighboring Senegal along with others sister countries in West Africa to quicken the integration process of the sub region.
