Zimbabwe banks dispense US dollars as cash situation improves

Harare, Zimbabwe, December 24 (Infosplusgabon) -  Some banks in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, on Saturday dispensed a combination of United States dollars and bond notes to depositors for the end-of-year festive season, an indication that the cash situation in the southern Africa country has improved, observers said.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor John Mangudya explained the improvement in cash availability was a result of the huge chunk of foreign currency imported by government to ease long queues and ensure people got access to money for the festive season and beyond.

Different local banks dispensed a combination of US dollars and bond notes since Thursday this week.

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) News reported that some depositors were “in a jovial mood as they managed to withdraw their cash ranging from US$50 to US$100.”

Also, some banks dispensed cash from ATMs while at some finance houses civil servants could withdraw up to US$300.

The Reserve Bank has advised the public to be patient and desist from rushing to withdraw all their savings as the first step taken under the new dispensation would see more foreign currency and bond notes injected into the system soon.
