Kigali, Rwanda, December 19 (Infosplusgabon) -  One of Rwanda's telecommunications service providers, Bharti Airtel Rwanda, has acquired full control of its former competitor Tigo Rwanda, a subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular SA, according to an official statement made available on Tuesday in Kigali.

It said that the acquisition would consolidate the Rwandan telecommunications market, which was until recently shared by three operators - Bharti Airtel Rwanda (1,586,018 subscribers), MTN Rwanda (3,520,315 subscribers) and TIGO Rwanda (3,252,765 subscribers).

Airtel has presence in 15 African countries with close to 83 million customers.

Commenting on the move, the chairman of Bharti Airtel, Sunil Mittal, was quoted as saying that the telecommunications provider had taken proactive steps in Africa to consolidate and realign the market structure.

These interventions will target the last few remaining countries where Airtel's operations are lagging on account of lower market share and presence of too many operators, it said.

"We are committed to the long term viability of our operations in two other countries, namely, Kenya and Tanzania," he said.
