Nairobi, Kenya, December 14 (Infosplusgabon) -  At least 150 people have been killed on Kenyan highways since 1 December in accidents blamed on drunk driving and road indiscipline, the Kenya Police, transport and highways authorities said Thursday.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KNHA), Police and  National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said new measures would be implemented to deal with conditions on the road.

On Tuesday, at least 17 people were killed after several vehicles were involved in a multiple vehicle crash in Sachangwan, 200km outside Nairobi.

On Monday, 19 people were killed in an accident along Kitale-Webuye highway at Kamukuywa

In western Kenya when a passenger vehicle crashed into a stationery truck transporting sugarcane, Police said.

"Preliminary investigations attribute the causes of these crashes to risk factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline and drunk driving," the Kenyan authorities said in a joint statement.

Accordingly, the government plans to implement new measures to boost the safety of drivers and passengers along highways.

KNHA said construction of additional lanes would be done within days while the government plans to award contracts for the construction of a 160km dual carriageway linking Nairobi to Nakuru.
