AU says US decision on Jerusalem complicates Middle East conflict

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, December 7 (Infosplusgabon) - African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said on Thursday US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was regrettable and would increase tensions.

“The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the solidarity of the AU with the Palestinian people and its support to their legitimate quest for an independent and sovereign State with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Mahamat said in a statement.

Mahamat said he noted with deep concern the decision of the US Government, announced to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel.

The AU chief regretted the decision, which he warned would increase tensions in the region and beyond and further complicate the search for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The AU called for renewed international efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict, based on the existence of two States, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security, within the framework of AU and UN pronouncements.
