Kenya dominates regional junior Judo Championships

Nairobi, Kenya, October 6 (Infosplusgabon) - Kenya emerged winners of the East and Central Africa Juniors and Cadets Judo Championships in Nairobi Sunday night.

 

The hosts emerged top of the four-nation, two-day event with 54 medals, toppling defend champions Burundi, who have been dominating the event. Burundi finished second.

 

South Sudan and Tanzania finished third and fourth respectively in the annual regional championships.

 

Kenya scooped 16 gold, 16 silver and 22 medals in the event which featured boys and girls in the juniors (18-21 age group) and cadets, below the age of 18.

 

Among the best performers were Kenya's Kimberley Wekesa, who struck two gold medals in the  girls under 53 kg in the juniors and cadets respectively.

 

She was declared the best judoka in the championships. Another double gold medallist was Jedida Wekesa in the under-78 kg category.

 

Meanwhile, Burundi will host the 2018 Africa Juniors and Cadets Championships in March, Kenya Judo Federation (KJF) President, Shadrack Maluki, said Monday morning.

 

Speaking to the press when the team paid a courtesy call on Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture Principal Secretary, Amb. Karimi Kaberia, Maluki attributed the good performance to hardwork, discipline and teamwork.

 

Amb. Kaberia lauded the team for the good performance, noting  that some of the gold medallists are as young as 11 years and pledged US$100,000 to the Federation, to enhance their preparations for the continental event.
