Monrovia, Liberia, December 1 (Infosplusgabon) -  A professional nurse and former staff of the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS), Mrs. Roselyn Nugba Ballah, Thursday received the Florence Nightingale Medal in the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

The medal is the highest distinct international award honouring nurses and nurse aides for the exceptional courage and devotion to the victims of armed conflict or natural disaster.

Mrs. Ballah is among 39 outstanding nurses from 22 countries, including Liberia, who received the medal honouring exceptional courage and devotion to the victims of armed conflict or natural disaster.

This distinct highest international award given to Madam Ballah also recognized her exemplary service or a pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education.

Mrs. Ballah headed the Liberian Red Cross’ safe and dignified burial team, comprising 140 volunteers, ensuring that all Ebola dead bodies were collected from the streets and communities within Monrovia and its environs and properly buried during the Ebola operations in Liberia in 2014 and 2015.

She was nominated by the Liberian Red Cross and selected by a commission comprised of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Council of Nurses in May 2017.

LNRCS president Jerome Clarke, presenting the medal in Monrovia, underscored Ballah’s outstanding performance and commitment to offer hope and support to humanity during the dangerous period of Ebola.

Clarke said the award is an indication that the work of the Liberian Red Cross former staff and volunteers are still being recognized and appreciated internationally to motivate other staff and volunteers in the service of humanity in Liberia.

Since the Ebola response, the Liberian Red Cross and some of its staff and volunteers have received several awards.

Institutionally, the Red Cross has received the Golden Image Award, Investiture Ebola Virus Disease Award, Spanish Red Cross Ebola Virus Disease Award, and the Special Humanitarian Award.

Individually, Mrs. Neima Candy, a former staff of the Liberian Red Cross got the Alumni category of the 2016 Advance Global Australian Award and the latest Florence Nightingale Medal awarded to Mrs. Roselyn Ballah, including the recent Henry Davidson Award given to Thomas Marwolo on behalf of the Liberian Red Cross volunteers for their sacrificial services to humanity during the Ebola crisis.

Madam Ballah follows medical doctor Jerry Brown and parliamentarian Saah Joseph who earlier received the medal for their roles in combating the Ebola disease outbreak in Liberia
