Banjul, Gambia, November 30 (Infosplusgabon) - President Adama Barrow of The Gambia has declared Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, as public holiday throughout the country.
According to a statement from the presidency, the holiday is in honour of Maulud Nabi, locally called “Gamo”, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) on the night of Thursday, 30 November 2017.
His birthday is commemorated by many Muslims around the world with recitation of the Holy Quran, religious songs and preaching about his life.
Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), son of Abdullah and Aminata, was born in the Holy city of Makka, in Saudi Arabia. He was married to Khaddija for 25 years before later marrying others, including Sawdah, Aisha, Hafsa and Zainab.
All his children died before him except Fatima, mother of his grandchildren, Hussain and Hassan.
President Barrow took the opportunity to wish the Muslim Community a blessed holiday.
