Rwandan PM urges more efforts to improve post-harvest crop handling

Kigali, Rwanda, November 28 (Infosplusgabon) -  Rwandan Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente on Monday called for increased efforts to advance agricultural transformation in the country's remote rural areas in order to ensure farmers have extra development activities through post-harvest marketing of their produce.

While on a tour of pilot irrigation projects in Nyagatare district, northeastern Rwanda, Ngirente observed that producers could incur losses if appropriate measures were not taken in packaging to maintain the post-harvest quality of crops.

Rwanda's producers can compete on the domestic and regional markets through improved storage of crops, according to government officials.

Through the second phase of its Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy, the government seeks to make agriculture a priority sector, with emphasis on raising it from subsistence to commercial production.
