UN roots for enhanced gender equality in agriculture in Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda, November 13  (Infosplusgabon) - UN agencies will avail financial resources and technical expertise to the Rwandan government in a move to address current gaps that still exist to mainsitream gender into agricultural policies and programmes, according to an official statement made available on Monday in Kigali.

The fact-sheet distributed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations stressed that the new dialogue is especially targeting Senates, Parliamentarians and Senior Managers in various government offices.

The dialogue, which is being conducted under the theme, "Rwandan Agriculture and its nexus with gender equality, Malabo Declaration and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a Climate Smart Agriculture" is organised at time, official reports indicate that women farmers in Rwanda as well as in sub-Saharan Africa are not as productive as men due to less access to land, markets, farming technologies, fertilizer, credit and training.

Experts say that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase their farm yields by 20-30 percent, feeding an additional 150 million people.

Women in sub-Saharan Africa have the  highest average agricultural labour force participation in the world, an estimated 70% in 2016, the report said
