Cape Town, South Africa, November 13 (Infosplusgabon) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress on Monday dismissed allegations that there were moves underway to remove secretary general Gwede Mantashe.

The party, which is lurching through a wave of high profile scandals linked to President Jacob Zuma, is holding its special national executive committee meeting in Pretoria.

There were unconfirmed media reports that a faction in the party behind Zuma and his ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma have accused Mantashe of campaigning for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Mantashe has repeatedly said Ramaphosa should become President to continue with the trend that started during Nelson Mandela’s presidency.

The party said it “rejects with contempt the malicious and mischievous reports being peddled about the proceedings of the meeting”

"These rumours are peddled to sow confusion and division within the movement and are indicative of the media's laziness and total disregard for proper journalistic ethics in favour of populism and sensationalism," the ANC said in a statement.
