Casablanca, Morocco, November 5 (Infosplusgabon) - Newly crowned CAF Champions League champions, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, have pocketed a record US$2.5 million for their victory in the finals of the competition on Saturday night in Casablanca.
Wydad, who beat Al Ahly of Egypt 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate following a 1-1 draw in the first leg match in Alexandria one week ago, are also expected to earn another US$1 million for securing a place at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in December.
In a tense match, a firm header in the 69th minute by Walid El Karti settled the duel of the North African giants.
Al Ahly is guaranteed US$1.25 million while the semi-finalists - USM Alger and Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia - got US$875,000 each.
This is Wydad's second CAF Champions League trophy after their 1992 success. They lost the finals in 2011 to Esperance Sportive de Tunis of Tunisia.
