JICA funds Botswana’s forest monitoring system

Gaborone, Botswana, November 2 (Infosplusgabon) - Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) has assisted Botswana develop a national forest monitoring system (NFMS).

 

Daniel Moatshe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, on Thursday said the system plays a crucial role in the promotion of sustainable natural resource management.

 

“The purpose of the NFMS to ensure that the state of forest in the country is accurately updated through regular monitoring, utilizing the national forest monitoring system,” Moatshe said.

 

Some of the outputs of the project include forest distribution map, national forest inventory, forest GIS database and national forest monitoring plan.

 

The Department of Forestry and Range Resources (DFRR) who executed the project has collaborated with various stakeholders - Department of Tourism, Department of Energy Affairs, Botswana GHG Inventory Project, Okavango Research Institute, SADC, universities and other non-governmental organizations.
