Pan African human rights meeting opens in Gambia

Banjul, Gambia, November 1 (Infosplusgabon) - The 61st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights opened Wednesday in Banjul, The Gambian capital, with several rights groups and state parties across Africa and beyond attending.

 

The bi-annual human rights jamboree gives opportunity to human rights defenders and government representatives to review human rights situations in various countries in Africa as well as make recommendations on ways of improving human rights on the continent.

 

The current ordinary session also coincided with the 30 anniversary of the establishment of the Banjul-based African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

 

The ceremony was declared open by Gambian President Adama Barrow and was attended by members of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, delegates of African Union Member States, representatives of National Human Rights Institutions, representatives of Non-Governmental and Civil Society Organizations and members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, among  others.
