Kigali, Rwanda, November 1 (Infosplusgabon) - Rwandan law enforcement officers are searching for three prisoners, including a former journalist and director of a religious local radio station, Cassien Ntamuhanga, who escaped early this week from one of the high-security prisons in Mpanga, Southern Rwanda, authoritative sources confirmed Wednesday in Kigali.

The sources said the officers are now preparing to strengthen their perimeter around the area where they suspect some of the escaped prisoners might be hiding, according to the spokesperson of the Rwanda Correctional service, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hillary Sengabo.

Infosplusgabon  recalls that Ntamuhanga was convicted in February 2015 to 25 years in prison of forming a criminal gang, conspiracy against the established government or president, complicity in a terrorist act and conspiracy to murder.

According to prison authorities, the prisoners scaled the wall and escaped between 2 and 3 am on Monday.

Mpanga prison is currently described as one of the prisons meeting international standards, since it has started to host detainees transferred to Rwanda for trial by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in April 2012.

In addition, some of the former leaders of a militia accused of torturing and mutilating civilians during Sierra Leone's civil war are being held in this facility.

The East African country also established the Mpanga prison to accommodate prisoners convicted of war crimes committed during the 1994 genocide.
