Monrovia, Liberia, October 31 (Infosplusgabon) - The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Tuesday deployed 20 long-term observers to Liberia to monitor the run-off presidential elections on 7 November.

They arrived in Monrovia on Monday and will be deployed to all regions in Liberia, René Schulthoff, Press and Public Outreach Officer at EU EOM, told PANA in Monrovia.

Another 34 short-term observers will reinforce the Mission shortly before election day, he explained.

The short-term team will bring to 81 the total deployment that includes the long- and short- term staff and a core team in Monrovia.

Similar number of observers monitored the first round of the election on 10 October, Schulthoff revealed.

The Liberian government invited the European Union to deploy an observer mission and the two signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the issue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia in August.

The EU EOM is an independent body from any EU institutions, member states or government committed to be neutral and abide by the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and Code of Conduct as well as the laws of Liberia.
