Gaborone, Botswana, October 31 (Infosplusgabon) - Botswana has been challenged to adopt a paradigm shift, if the country is to compete and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) among her peers.
Bashi Gaetsaloe, Botswana Development Corporation (DBC) Chief Executive Officer, on Tuesday told participants in the annual business jamboree – Global Expo - in the capital Gaborone that the nation should change perspectives.
He also said the size of the country should not deter attracting FDI but be utilised to the nation’s advantage.
"Being a small country is actually an advantage. We can do things that other countries cannot do. Let us change this smallness to be a very big advantage,” Gaetsaloe said.
Gaetsaloe said Botswana should be inspired to build Africa's 1st Green City or be the first African country to provide free broadband WIFI to attract investors.
He, however, bemoaned the country work ethics, as a stumbling block to productivity which also attracts investors.
"Our work ethic isn't where it should be. We need to deal with it! We do not have the competitive edge in this country and this is a major problem. We need to be passionate about productivity and we shall see its effects across services," Gaetsaloe said.
On perspectives, Gaetsaole said some fundamentals have to change, so that a paradigm shift is made.
“We perceive ourselves as the underdog and that makes us hungry as a country. Let us be hungry to succeed and not be left behind," said Gaetsaloe.
Global Expo Botswana is an event known for providing a conducive and convenient trade platform for both local and international businesses to facilitate long term business relationships.
This year’s expo is the 12th edition of the exhibition held in the capital, Gaborone.
