ECOWAS condemns violent demonstrations in Togo

Niamey, Niger, October 25  (Infolplusgabon)-  Ongoing demonstrations in Togo must be done peacefully, otherwise the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has will not hesitate to react  vigorously on the situation, leaders of the regional grouping warned on Wednesday.

''Firstly, it is important to have a peaceful atmosphere in Togo. We condemn the violence whatever its origin and demonstrations must be done in a peaceful manner. Then, there must be negotiations on various aspects such as constitutional amendment, leadership term limitation  and the issues of two-round elections", said Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara.

Speaking to journalists at the conclusion of the 4th meeting of the Presidential Task Force on the ECOWAS Currency Programme, in Niamey, Niger, President Ouattara said: "We hope that Togo will have a peaceful atmosphere, it is a country that has made its way through. We encourage the Togolese to find the best necessary way.

"The proposals which have already been made are proposals which allow to move towards more democracy in Togo and we support these initiatives."

The Heads of State who attended the meeting have also agreed that any person responsible for the violence in Togo must be sanctioned.

Five heads of state, forming the Presidential Task Force on the ECOWAS Currency Programme, attended the two-day meeting. These are Presidents Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, Nana Akufo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of  Cote d'Ivoire.
