Recovery efforts continue after Kenyan chopper crash

Nairobi, Kenya, October 22 (Infosplusgabon) - Recovery efforts have continued on Sunday, at the site of a helicopter crash on Lake Nakuru, 165 km outside the capital, Nairobi, where five people are feared dead, Police said.

The helicopter carrying a team of bloggers and journalists linked to President Uhuru Kenyatta's campaign, crashed into the Lake on Saturday, police said.

The state aviation authority denied the ill-fated helicopter belonged to President Kenyatta.

The main opposition leader, Raila Odinga, said the government should marshal its entire mascle to recover the bodies from the Lake.

"On behalf the NASA Coalition and on my own behalf, I extend sincere condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the five Kenyans who died aboard the helicopter that crashed in Lake Nakuru," Odinga said in a statement Sunday.

Odinga said the pilot of the ill-fated aircraft, Captain Apollo Mallowa, was known to him personally and their familie were related.

"He had flown me a few times in my travels around the country. Always charming, he was dedicated to his job and was ever keen on contributing to the professionalization of the air travel sector in Kenya," Odinga said.

The rescue operation was abandoned after heavy rain and fear of attacks by the hippopotamus on the Lake.

The delegation was heading to a campaign rally in Kajiado, outside Nairobi, when the aircraft crashed.
