Brazzaville, Congo, October 19 (Infosplusgabon) -  Congolese minister of Trade, Supplies and Consumption, Claude Alphonse Nsilou, has urged members countries of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) to join their efforts in the prevention of disasters in the sub-region.

Speaking Thursday at the closing of the 3rd joint conference of Central African ministers responsible for prevention of risks and weather-related disasters and weather, which was held in Brazzaville, Mr Nsilou said that the African continent was vulnerable to several natural contingencies and that the lack of adapted measures increased vulnerability.

According to him, among factors that increase the fragility of the human living environment include the fast growing population of Africa, non-durable exploitation of natural resources, and unplanned expansion of cities.

Despite the human incapacity to face natural disasters that devastate communities, people can  work to lessen their impact, said Nsilou.

He said that Central Africa was not spared from extreme phenomena, often unpredictable, which cause material and human losses, affect the quality of life of populations, breaking the development impetus of countries.

He noted that ECCAS is working to ensure efficient urban, economic, structural, legal, public health and social planning with a view to either prevent or reduce the risks of disasters which about 170 million inhabitants of the sub-region face.
