Calm returns to Tripoli after Tuesday's bloody clashes

Tripoli, Libya, October 18 (Infosplusgabon) - Calm returned to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Wednesday after violent clashes in the eastern suburb of al-Ghararat and the seaport claimed three lives on Tuesday and left 14 persons wounded, one of them seriously, reliable sources told Infosplusgabon.

 

Earth mounds and barriers erected during the clashes have been removed and the main roads re-opened to traffic, the spokesperson of the Deterrent Special Force Information Office, Ahmed Ben Salem, said.

 

He said that the Force deployed mobile patrols in al-Ghararat after takeover of the area, confirming the resumption of local and international air traffic at Maitigua airport.

 

According to reports, clashes broke out early Tuesday in al-Gararat area between Deterrent Special Forces, elite unit of the Libyan police and youths of the region, following the death of a resident of the district.

 

The head of the field hospital in Tripoli, Dr Abdeldaim al-Rabti, said that the Special Force lost one soldier and three of its troops were wounded.

 

On the al-Gararat youths’ side, two were killed and eight were wounded during the clashes. Six of them sustained between minor and moderate injuries.
