Tunis, Tunisia, October 18 (Infosplusgabon) - A Tunisian navy unit on Wednesday intercepted 12 illegal migrants who were on board a boat, about 70 km off the island of Kerkennah, in southeast Tunisian waters, said a communiqué issued by the Defence ministry.
According to the ministry, the boat had run out of fuel, but the identity of the migrants was not revealed.
Since the beginning of the year, illegal migrants have made attempts from several Tunisian ports to cross the Mediterranean to the Italian coast.
The Tunisian forum of economic and social rights recently said that about 35,000 illegal migrants have, since the 2011 revolution to December 2016, left the Tunisian coast bound for Europe, and that 1,000 Tunisians died attempting to enter Italy illegally.
