Around 4 million displaced persons registered in DR Congo

Kinshasa, DR Congo,  October  18 (Infsplusgabon)  -  Between 3.8 and 4 million displaced persons were registered by 30 September in various DR Congo provinces, a UN country team spokesperson, Joseph Makamba, said on Wednesday.

 

Speaking at a UN weekly press briefing, he said that about 300,000 newly displaced were registered between June and September, quoting the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

 

An influx of returnees, estimated at about 231,000 was recorded in the Tanganyika province, Makamba said.

 

Besides, the Kasaï region in central DR Congo, witnessed a huge number of people returning home between August 2016 and September 2017. Approximately, more than 631,000 people  returned home, bringing the number of presently displaced people in the region to about 762,000.

 

According to recent data of the UN, attacks and armed clashes were to blame for over 64% of population displacement, among other causes.
