2017 FIFA U-17 WC: Mali trounce Iraq 5-1 to reach quarter-finals; England, Spain, Iran also through

Goa, India, October 17 (Infosplusgabon) - Africa U-17 champions, Mali, on Tuesday trounced Iraq 5-1 in their Round of 16 match at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup match played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa, to reach the quarter-finals.

 

England, Spain and Iran also went through after victories over Japan, France and Mexico respectively.

 

Mali raced to a 2-0 lead at half-time with goals from Hadji Drame on 25th minute and Lassana N’Diaye after 33 minutes.

 

Three more goals from Fode Konate (73rd), Seme Camara (87th) and N'diaye's second on the day in time added on gave the five star Malians victory.

 

Ali Kareem scored Iraq's consolation goal in the 85th minute.

 

In the other matches, Iran beat Mexico 2-1 and Spain left it late as it came from behind to beat France 2-1, a 90th minute penalty by Abel Ruiz settling the European encounter.

 

England goalkeeper Curtis Anderson was the hero for the Three Lions as he saved a penalty and converted one of his own in a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Japan.

 

The final matches of the Round of 16 will be played on Wednesday. Ghana will play Niger while Brazil meet Honduras.
