Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, October 16 (Infosplusgabon) -  The ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) is seeking support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the Ivorian national electoral commission, which will conduct Regional and Municipal polls in June 2018.

On Monday, an ECONEC team led by the president of its governing board, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, met with Babacar Cisse, the UNDP Coordinator and Resident Representative in Cote d'Ivoire, on the subject.

ECONEC officials said their team had already met with Ivorian electoral commission officials, civil society groups and the committee in charge of funds mobilisation.

They are also in the country on a Needs Assessment and Solidarity visit for capacity building of the Ivorian electoral commission.

The ECONEC team arrived from neighbouring Liberia where it observed Liberia's peaceful 10 October elections, which will go into a second round between former football star, George Weah, and incumbent vice president Joseph Boakai.

With 95% of the votes declared by the Liberia National Elections Commission, Weah has obtained 39.1% while Boakai has 29%, which is less than the legally required 50 per cent plus 1.
