Nigeria: Akwa United FC wins 2nd FA title in 3 years

Lagos, Nigeria, October  16 (Infosplusgabon) -  Akwa United Football Club of Uyo, established only in 1996, on Sunday regained the Nigerian Football Association (FA) Challenge Cup after beating Niger Tornadoes of Minna 3-2 in a penalty shootout at the Agege Stadium in Lagos State.

Both teams tied 0-0 at the end regulation time and had to use the penalty shootout to break the deadlock.

For the Akwa Ibom players, it was a historic moment when the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, and some CAF Executive Committee members graced the occasion which gave them their second FA Cup following their victory in 2015 in the country’s oldest domestic competition. The 2017 contest was the 71st edition.

For winning the trophy, the club pocketed a mouth-watering 25 Million Naira (US$70,323) prize money and the glittering trophy as winners as well as earned a ticket to represent Nigeria in next year’s Total CAF Confederation Cup.

It was also the 11th time the competition was decided via penalties after it began in 1945 as the Governor’s Cup. It was later known at various times as Challenge Cup and Federation Cup
