Freetown, Sierra Leone, October 16 (Infosplusgabon) - Sierra Leone's main opposition party, Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), on Sunday night elected former head of state Julius Maada Bio as its presidential candidate for the 2018 election.

Bio, a retired Brigadier in the Army, who was head of state after a palace coup in 1996, was one of five candidates who contested for the position. He handed over power to the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.

This is the second time Bio is running for the presidency on the ticket of the SLPP. In 2012, he ran against incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma and lost in the first round. President Koroma won his second and final term in that election and is not qualified to contest again.

He is expected to announce his running mate in the coming weeks, after consultations with the National Executive Council of the party.
