KHARTOUM, Sudan, October 7 (Infosplusgabon) - Sudan has hailed the US for repealing the economic sanctions imposed on the African country over two decades ago, saying Khartoum has started addressing issues of concern to the US which sparked the imposition.

Enthusiastically welcoming the development, Khartoum said “The Sudan leadership, its government and people welcome the positive decision taken by US President Donald Trump on October 6, 2017, permanently revoking the economic sanctions imposed on the Sudan under Executive Orders 13067 and 13412. The sanctions were imposed in 1997 (20 years ago).

The move is in recognition of the Sudan's sustained positive actions to maintain a cessation of hostilities in conflict areas in Sudan, improve humanitarian access throughout Sudan, and maintain cooperation with the United States on addressing regional conflicts and the threat of terrorism. The revocation order will be effective from October 12, 2017.

In a statement carried by the Sudanese ministry of foreign affairs early Saturday, Khartoum said “The Sudan would like to reaffirm clearly that it would continue its cooperation with the United States of American in all the bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly in the questions related to the conservation of international peace and security and in combating terrorism in all its forms and in combating illegal and human trafficking.”

The Americans have, however, said they would remain in the watch should Sudan falter in maintaining the momentum in those areas.

The revocation of the sanctions does not mean removing the name of the Sudan from the list of countries Washington considers sponsors of international terrorism, the Americans warned.

But the Africans have said the Sudan is also looking for building normal relations with the US and looks forwards to its name being removed from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
