BANJUL,  Gambia, October 6 (Infosplusgabon) - Gambia has approved the repatriation of over 1,000 of its nationals stranded in Europe, Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad minister Ousainou Darboe confirmed on Friday.

The minister told lawmakers in the capital, Banjul, that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will repatriate many stranded Gambians from European countries. About 772 Gambians were repatriated from Libya recently.

According to Darboe, over a thousand Gambians have manifested their willingness to return to the country on voluntary basis. He said that government hasn’t attached any condition on the returnees and it is committed to tackle irregular migration as a top priority

He explained that the government plan is focused on creating job opportunities to minimize the unemployment rate among young Gambians but it doesn’t promise to give or grant any returnees money.

However, the minister pointed out that all the government could do is to compensate returnees with at least something to begin life with.
