Ethiopia: AU calls for restraint in troubled Cameroon territory

ADDIS ABEBA, Ethiopia, October 6 (Infosplusgabon)  -  The African Union (AU) has called for restraint from acts of violence in the English-speaking North West and South West regions of Cameroon.

AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said on Friday the Addis Ababa-based organisation was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in the country.

At least eight people have been killed in the violence in the English speaking Cameroon regions, according to the government, although human rights watchdog Amnesty International says the death toll has reached 17. The opposition put the death toll at 30.

“The Chairperson expresses condolences to all affected persons and families and calls on all stakeholders to exercise restraint in their pronouncements and to refrain from further acts of violence,” the AU said in a statement.

The AU Chairperson said the African Union was keen to support the efforts of the government and people of Cameroon towards a peaceful settlement of the crisis through inclusive and meaningful dialogue and national reconciliation.

The demonstrators have recently poured into the streets to demand secession.

The protests in Cameroon came after months of similar protests in European capitals against the government of President Paul Biya.

“The Chairperson of the Commission reaffirms the commitment of the African Union to promote peace and stability in Cameroon, in line with its relevant instruments that consecrates the principle of the intangibility of African Borders as they existed at Independence and other relevant AU instruments,” the AU Chairperson said.
