South Africa: South African court allows extradition of suspected Australian paedophile

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, October 5 (Infosplusgabon) - A Cape Town court has cleared the extradition of an alleged Australian paedophile who has been on the run for six years.

The court ruled that Anthony Freedendal must be returned to his homeland despite the fact that he is in custody at Pollsmoor Prison – where former President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated in the 1980s – awaiting trial for a number of sex crimes which were allegedly committed in South Africa.

Magistrate Xoliswa Ndoyana addressed the matter of double criminality where a suspect faces separate charges in different countries and said he should be tried in Australia. He received bail in Port Lincoln Australia in a case where he was accused of abusing boys and girls and failed to appear for his court hearing. In South Africa, he was arrested and charged with the sexual abuse of eight children.

The 76-year-old has two weeks to appeal the ruling.

His lawyer William Booth has requested that his client’s poor health be taken into account. He suffers from cancer, tuberculosis and diabetes.
