Liberia: Ex-Ghanaian leader heads ECOWAS election Observer Mission to Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia, October 5 (Infosplusgabon) - Former Ghanaian President John Mahama, at the head of a 71-member Election Observer Mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), arrived in Liberia Thursday to observe the presidential and legislative polls, set for 10 October.

Mahama, the immediate past president of Ghana, who himself lost in an election in Ghana in 2016, will lead the ECOWAS observers to watch the pre-election, Election Day, and post-election processes.

Twenty-one ECOWAS long-term observers are already deployed in Liberia and are assigned across the 15 political sub-divisions of the country.

They will be joined by 50 short-term observers who arrive in Liberia later this week, with all ECOWAS election observers working under the direction of former president Mahama.

ECOWAS has maintained an active presence in Liberia since it helped the country regain peace after 14 years of bloody civil war that left over 250,000 persons killed and hundreds of millions destroyed of property.

The sub-regional body deployed thousands of troops at the height of the Liberian conflict and later led efforts to broker peace under which the country will be holding its third democratic election.

ECOWAS has an Ambassador designated to oversee its activities in Liberia.

The ECOWAS team will add to a number of international observers from the European Union, African Union, United States-based Carter Center and National Democratic Institute as well as tens of local observer groups,, among others.
