MONROVIA, Liberia, October 5 (Infosplusgabon) - A 34-member observer delegation from the US-based National Democratic Institute (NDI) will Thursday join international and local observers for the Liberian presidential and legislative elections, slated for 10 October.

The team, which comprises political and civil leaders and election experts from Africa, Europe and North America, will be in the country from 5-12 October, according to the NDI.

It will be led by US Senator Gary Peters (MI), Senator Ken Nnamani, former President of the Nigerian Senate, and Dr. Christopher Fomunyoh, Regional Director of NDI.

The delegation will visit polling places on Election Day, and hold high-level meetings with the National Elections Commission, government officials, political party leaders, and civil society representatives.

NDI has already conducted two pre-election missions to Liberia and has made recommendations to key stakeholders in statements in February and September this year.

In addition, the NDI deployed six long-term observers and four long-term analysts in Liberia since July.

The delegation will present its findings at a press conference in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, on 12 October.

The NDI is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizens’ participation, openness and accountability in government.

It first worked in Liberia in 1997, providing technical assistance to Liberian voter education and election monitoring efforts. It has run an in-country office in Liberia since 2003.

The NDI delegation will add to a number of international observers from the European Union, African Union, United States-based Carter Center and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), among others.
