Kenya: Opposition leaders decry travel ban in Kenya

NAIROBI,  Kenya, September 28 (Infosplusgabon) - Kenyan opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula were temporarily barred from leaving Nairobi on a flight to Entebbe, Uganda, on Thursday, and required to obtain President Uhuru Kenyatta’s permission to travel, the opposition alliance, NASA, said.

“NASA condemns this latest infringement on the freedoms and liberties and the harassment of its top leadership,” opposition Presidential candidate Raila Odinga, said.

His deputy, Musyoka, was temporarily barred from flying to Uganda to attend a graduation ceremony as the Chancellor of Uganda Technology Management University.

According to NASA, the co-principals of the opposition, would be required to obtain permission for future travel in line with the government’s latest directive banning foreign travel without official authorization.

Following the nullification of the Presidential election early this month, President Kenyatta’s Chief of Staff, Joseph Kinyua, announced all government officials must seek clearance before travel.

The order affected senior government officials, including Judges of the High Court and the Supreme Court. Members of the country’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission have also been barred from leaving the country until after the re-run of the Presidential election.

Odinga said the attempt by State House to curtail the movement of opposition leaders and monitoring their movement through state clearance is an illegitimate manoeuvre by a paranoid regime.

According to Odinga, the opposition must remain free as a legitimate part and parcel of the Kenyan landscape and be allowed to pursue its mandate as an alternative voice of the people.
