KHARTOUM, Sudan, September 28 (Infosplusgabon) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended Sudan for opening up its borders to receive South Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict in their country.

A press release by the UN received in Khartoum on Thursday said Mr. Guterres met with Sudan's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Ghandour, in New York and that the UN chief has "commended Sudan for its long tradition of maintaining open borders to receive refugees and for opening corridors for humanitarian assistance to South Sudan".

It said the two sides discussed efforts to resume peace talks to end the conflict in Darfur and the need to create a conducive environment for the opposition to join an inclusive political process in Sudan.

"The Secretary-General encouraged Sudan to continue efforts to resume a political dialogue on Abyei and find a peaceful settlement to the border area."

It added that the UN Secretary-General took note of "the significant decrease in armed conflict in Darfur" and underlined the importance of continuing the good cooperation between the United Nations and the Government in implementing reconfiguration of the peacekeepers and new concept of operations.
