Italy: Italy advises Khalifa Haftar to choose political route if he wants to lead Libya

ROME,  Italiy, September 27 (Infosplusgabon) - The Italian government has asked Libyan Army Chief of Staff, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, to choose the political route if he wants to lead Libya, the Italian newspaper Repubblica said on Wednesday.

According to the paper, the call was made to Marshal Khalifa Haftar on Tuesday during his meeting with the Italian Minister of Defence Roberta Pinotti and Interior Minister Marco Minniti.

Ms. Pinotti was quoted by Repubblica as saying that Italy supported the negotiations that have just begun and were being conducted by UN Special Envoy Ghassan Salamè.

Italy called on all parties in Libya to support the negotiations and to avoid the use of weapons for political purposes, added Ms Pinotti.

Haftar completed his visit to Rome on Wednesday.
