Sierra Leone: FA hands down life bans to 18 football officials

FREETOWN,  Sierra Leone,  September 23 (Infosplusgabon) -  In a dramatic 24 hours in Sierra Leone football, the Football Association (FA) has banned a total of 18 football executives and officials around the country.

This decision was made last night following the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) announcement indicting the President and Secretary General of the Association on Thursday.

In a press release, the FA said: “The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) would like to inform the general public and the football family that the indicted individuals have been banned for life by the Executive Committee of the SLFA with immediate effect.”

The list of banned officials includes names of FA presidential aspirant, Sanusi Bruski Kargbo, who is the Chairman of East End Lions FC, and Chairmen of five other Premier League clubs.

The Sierra Leone Football Association said the officials were in breach of FIFA and SLFA statutes which prevent people from taking football related matters to court.

Last month, most of the banned officials sued the SLFA demanding that the current executive stop running the association and congress be held after the term of President Issa Johansen came to an end.

One of the banned officials, Kasho Holland Cole said in response to the ban that “SLFA is a limited company by guarantee, it can sue and be sued.”

Most of those banned have told Infosplusgabon that they will not adhere to the latest ruling by the FA. They have referred to the FA’s decision as a retaliation because of the ACC corruption indictment of the President and Secretary General.

Football stakeholders in the country are bracing up for the arrival of the FIFA Integrity Committee, to run background checks on potential executive members ahead of an overdue congress.
