KIGALI,  Rwanda, September 20 (Infosplusgabon) -  Rwandan officials have started the distribution of relief materials to victims of this week's floods in the north and southeast of the country.

According to the Rwandan Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees, the floods triggered by incessant rainfall across several parts in northern and southeastern Rwanda, have not only left several families homeless but also destroyed at least 474 hectares of farms leaving the farmers doomed.

Food items, household wares and domestic animals were also affected across four communities during the flooding which also destroyed at least 6 bridges in the region, the government said.

The humanitarian relief comprises mainly of clothes, tents, blankets and food items to the affected areas including villages of Rubaya, Kaniga and Cyumba in Gicumbi District located in the northern Rwanda, near the Ugandan border.

According to the government, first aid, relief supplies and seeds are currently being provided around the clock in the affected districts.

In the meanwhile, weather forecasts indicate that more torrential downpours are expected across the country between September and December and Rwandan officials have urged communities living in remote rural zones to fight against erosion.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in the same region, the weather agency said, urging residents in affected areas to stay vigilant for possible flooding and mudslides.
