Ghana president orders police protection for former Special Prosecutor

Accra, Ghana, November 20 (Infosplusgabon) - Ghana's President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the police to immediately provide 24-hour protection for the former Special Prosecutor, Mr. Martin Amidu, who has alleged several threats on his life.

The Communication Director for the President, Eugene Arhin, in a Facebook post, asked the former anti-graft chief to assist the police with details of persons who have made these threats against his life, so that they can be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country.

Mr. Amidu, who resigned last Monday citing interference in his work by the presidency and government after his report on a controversial gold royalties deal, said in an interview on Thursday that he had received threats of burglary, arson and death.

“All these threats … I know the persons behind them and the President will be responsible for anything that happens to me,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.

The Presidency and government have denied the allegations of interference in the work of the former Special Prosecutor saying he was provided with all that he needed to do his work.

Mr. Amidu said President Akufo-Addo should be held responsible should anything happen to him, since several calls to the National Security Minister about the concerns of his safety have gone unanswered.

He has also said if the attacks on him persist he will be compelled to speak out in order to defend his integrity.

“I am being pushed by so-called responses to me which contain blatant falsehood to speak. But I do not want anybody to blame me when I speak out and it becomes unpalatable,” Mr. Amidu said.

“Either the attacks stop or I will defend my integrity. It is something I won by dint of hard work from the PNDC (the government of the Provisional National Defence Council of the late Jerry Rawlings) to date and I’m not going to allow anybody even the president to put that integrity into the mire,” he said.
