Conakry, Guinea, October 31 (Infosplusgabon) - The majority party in Guinea Friday welcomed the provisional results of the presidential election of October 18 and congratulated its candidate, Alpha Conde, who was re-elected with 59.49 per cent of the total votes cast.

In a statement issued here, the majority said it rejoiced in the "good conduct" of the election, adding that “this historic ballot, which consecrates the election of the first president of the 4th Republic, was open, transparent, inclusive and had a record turnout of voters”.

"This victory of democracy, which is the pride of the Guinean nation, is the work of all the actors involved in the electoral process and remains to the credit of the sovereign people of Guinea, always at the rendezvous of history and its destiny," the statement said.

The presidential majority "deeply regrets and unreservedly and unequivocally condemns" the violence that followed the vote and caused significant material damage and loss of life.

It welcomed the opening of investigations to establish responsibility for these painful events and urged the appropriate authorities to spare no effort to find and prosecute the perpetrators, instigators and accomplices of these "criminal acts".

"Pending the ruling of the Constitutional Court, the presidential majority congratulates President Alpha Condé for having led the country in a climate of security and serenity to this major consultation of national democratic life."

On the other hand, 10 of the 12 candidates who took part in the election, during a press conference held Friday, rejected the provisional results published Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

It, however, excluded Laye Souleymane, leader of the Party for Freedom and Progress (PLP), who congratulated President Conde on his re-election.

The group of unsuccessful candidates condemned the post-election violence and deplored the "use of lethal weapons" by the defence and security forces during law enforcement operations, and called on the government to identify the perpetrators of the crimes.

The judicial police, covered by the army, admitted having searched several homes in the upper suburbs of Conakry, where its officers found Kalashnikovs, 12 calibre rifles and edged weapons, among others, which were shown on television with their owners.

The government proceeded Thursday to hand over to their families, the bodies of 10 policemen and gendarmes who were killed by demonstrators a few hours after the skirmishes that erupted at the announcement of candidate Mamadou Cellou Dalien Diallo, leader of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG), who had proclaimed himself elected president in the first round before the end of the collation of votes for the final results.
