Tripoli, Libya, October 4  (Infosplusgabon) - More than 30 municipalities in Libya's western and southern regions will hold municipal council elections by the end of this year, a spokesman for the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections, Bassem al-Moudi, has announced.

In a statement on Saturday night on the private Libyan television channel, "Libya Al Ahrar", al-Moudi said the elections will be held on October 15 in the municipalities of South Zaouia, al-Harab and Jadou.

He said that the Committee will this month announce activities, including the registration of candidates for the elections in the municipalities of Tripoli-Center, Abu Slim, Souk al-Jumaa, Ain Zara, Hay al-Andalous, Tajoura, West Zaouia, Sabratha, al-Garabouli, Gasr al-akhyar al-Rajban.

The Libyan official added that next Sunday will be the date for elections in the Kabaou Municipal Council, pending the completion of logistical arrangements to ensure the success of the electoral process.

These cities are under the control of the Tripoli-based government of national accord, recognized by the international community.

Last September, the city of Misrata (220 km east of Tripoli) held municipal elections in a highly-transparent manner that was lauded by the United Nations Support Mission and the United States Embassy in Libya.
