Mike Pompeo calls for an end to foreign interference to allow Libyans to resolve their crisis

Tripoli, Libya, October 4  (Infosplusgabon) - US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has called for an end to interference in Libyan affairs, saying it is contributing to the worsening of the situation in Libya and not allowing Libyans solve their crisis themselves.

In an interview published Friday by the Italian newspaper, "La Repubblica", Pompeo called on Russia and Turkey to "take a step back and allow the Libyans to resolve their crisis themselves", adding that "his country believes that the intervention of a third party, whether Ankara or Moscow in Libya, will only worsen the situation".

The head of US diplomacy said the situation is "a little more complicated" in Libya now, stressing that the United States has called repeatedly in recent years for a solution negotiated by the United Nations, in order to create a situation on the ground that allows the Libyan people to meet all challenges.

He said the US administration is "united" with the European Union regarding the political process that started at the Berlin Conference held last January, so that the Libyan parties "meet and define the framework of a peaceful solution".

In this regard, the US Secretary of State called on the Libyan leaders to "make serious efforts to relaunch agreements capable of ensuring the long-term stability of the whole region".

He expressed the hope that other countries participating in military activities in Libya would halt their involvement, adding, "there is no need for other weapons, because bringing weapons to Libya is a violation of United Nations resolutions and after all, Libya is full of weapons, and it does not need other weapons. What is needed is a constructive dialogue between all the Libyan parties".

Last Wednesday, Pompeo traveled to Rome, where he spoke with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio, on the Libyan crisis.

At the end of the meeting, the two parties addressed a joint press conference, saying that the ground situation in Libya improved last week, because the Libyan parties came back to talk to each other.

Two inter-Libyan dialogue meetings took place in early September in Bouznika, Morocco, and Montreux, Switzerland, focusing on the criteria for occupying positions of sovereignty and the adoption of a transition phase spanning 18 months after which, general elections will be organized.
