Tunis, Tunisia, September 20(Infosplusgabon) - Tunisia has seen a record 625 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in a day, bringing the total number of infections in the country since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,736.

According to the epidemiological situation report published on Sunday by the Ministry of Health, the number of deaths increased by 17 to reach 155 against 138 on September 16. The number of hospitalised patients has reached 170 of whom 55 are in intensive care units and 18 are on respirators.

The Tunis region has the highest number of cases with 1,520 infections, followed by the region of Ben Arous (1,183 cases) and Gabés (1,114).

Since the opening of air and sea borders on June 27, Tunisia has recorded 7,827 confirmed cases, 613 deaths and 1,237 recoveries.

The national coordinator of the committee for the fight against coronavirus, Nissaf Ben Alia, said that a political decision was behind the opening of borders and the stop of mandatory testing for people from countries classified red.

Health and political figures accused the government of rushing the opening of borders when the virus was widespread around the world, killing thousands of people.
