Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,  September  (Infosplusgabon) – Ten school children have been confirmed to have lost their lives and several others are missing after a dormitory caught fire at dawn on Monday in the north-western region of Kagera in Tanzania.

According to reports from Kagera, the blaze broke out at a boys’ dormitory which accommodates 74 children at Byamungu Islamic School in Kyerwa district, killing 10 pupils instantly.

Kyerwa District Commissioner, Rashid Maimu, has been quoted as saying that 50 pupils survived the inferno and three others are missing. The cause of the early morning fire is yet to be established.

“At least 50 pupils have survived and have since been relocated to other dormitories,” said Maimu, who explained that six other children had taken refuge at a nearby hospital building after noticing the fire.

The fire brigade department in the district was collaborating with residents in the neighbourhood to put out the fire, according to the district commissioner.

As efforts to locate the three missing pupils continue, it is feared that they might have been burnt beyond recognition.
