Tunisian phosphate exports resume after two-year suspension

Imprimer PDF

Tunis, Tunisia, September 14 (Infosplusgabon) – Tunisia on Saturday exported the first cargo of commercial phosphate to Ireland, from the port of Sfax, after two years of interruption, sources close to the GAFSA Phosphate Company (CPG) said.

The company said other cargoes will be delivered to countries like Bulgaria, Ukraine and Brazil, adding that it had restored trade relations with former partners it had lost.

Since 2011, CPG has gone through significant degradation in terms of production because of protests in the mining sector, with its production over the past few years not exceeding 40% of its capacity achieved in 2010.

Phosphate is one of the main pillars of the Tunisian economy.

Reacting to the situation, the Governor of the Tunisian central bank, Marouane Abassi, told the Tunisian Parliament in February that the drop in phosphate production has, over the past six years, cost the government US$6.7 billion.
