Kigali, Rwanda, September 5 (Infosplusgabon)  - The number of COVID-19 patients under treatment at their respective homes in severe and critical condition has reached 12 in Rwanda, a senior health official said on Saturday in Kigali.

The Director General of Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), Sabin Nsanzimana, explained that there is a group of  COVID-19 patients in severe condition who are getting treatment at home.

"These cases in critical condition are part of  a group of asymptomatic patients who were under medical observation," he said.

Medical experts said the treatment of the severe and critical cases remained difficult.

The  system, which was rolled out last month, aims to ensure patients with  mild cases and are out of the high risk population, are isolated at home  until they test negative to the virus.

Official reports by  the RBC indicated that there are 18  treatment centres: 9 health centres and 7 schools with a total capacity  of 1,986 beds to accommodate COVID-19 patients across the country.
