Nouakchott, Mauritania, September 5 (Infosplusgabon)  - The enormous human and material damage due to torrential rains and flooding in Mauritania drew the attention of the local press this week.

The west African country was thoroughly  inundated particularly in the south and south-east, including the capital, Nouakchott.

According to media reports during the week, Adel Begro district that is over 1,200 km south-east of Nouakchott, was a distressing sight after torrents of water swept away some human lives, houses and livestock which is the only wealth of residents in the region.

After the meeting of an inter-ministerial committee on the situation, "Essaharaa" announced "the assistance of public authorities to the affected population. This concerned emergency relief food to families affected by the rains in Nouakchott, on the basis of identification carried out on the spot by technical committees dedicated to the task."

Similar observation was made by Sahara Media which reported about "distribution of aid in localities affected by bad weather".

"The Mauritanian authorities have handed over several tens of tons of food items: rice, sugar, oil, dates for the benefit of 389 families in 12 localities of Guidimakha", a region located in the Far East of the valley of Senegal River,'' wrote Sahara Media.

The government press also focused on the same aspect, "food aid to affected families after the floods", saying: "The authorities are closely monitoring the situation throughout the country."
