Kigali, Rwanda, September 3 (Infosplusgabon)  - One of the top leaders of Rwanda’s former ruling party, MRND, during the 1994 genocide, Edouard Karemera, serving a life jail as declared by the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in 2014, has died in a Senegalese prison,  a judicial source revealed on Wednesday.

Karemera was vice-president of MRND, the party of former Rwandan President, Juvénal Habyarimana, whose assassination on April 6, 1994, triggered the genocide.

Karemera was jailed for life after it was proved that he had abused his position within the then ruling party as part of a joint criminal enterprise.

He was transferred from Arusha, Tanzania, where the court was based, to Senegal in 2017, where he was held in the Sebikotane prison outside Dakar.
